Big 3 and Union Said to Be Near One Deal for All

Article Abstract:

Ford Motors, General Motors and Chrysler are close to an early, simultaneous deal in contract talks with the United Automobile Workers. For the first time, the union has allied itself with the Big Three against foreign, non-union competitors. Domestic auto share has declined this year in spite of a price war and discounts that have made it hard for the auto companies to make money. The union will insist on members keeping their health benefits, but will likely make concessions such as cutbacks on wage hikes, plant closures and changes in work rules.
