Big tobacco's rise

Article Abstract:

Several leading tobacco companies, including RJR and Liggett & Myers Co. started producing plug tobacco in the 1870s and by 1890, sales of chewing tobacco peaked and was overtaken by cigarettes and cigars. The inexpensive cigarette had eclipse the cigar as the most popular form of tobacco consumption by 1910 and after the break-up of American Tobacco, a handful of large firms focused on cigarette production setting the pattern for the growing US tobacco industry for the rest of the century.

Jeremy Rifkin's world without oil

Article Abstract:

Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economics Trends in Washington, D.C., states that the hydrogen fuel cells will change the world in ways far more profound than simply curbing pollution and ending oil dependence. He feels that by 2013, Europe will generate 22% of its electricity by renewable sources such as wind and solar power, with hydrogen fuel cells storing the excess.

Background: Tobacco economy

Article Abstract:

Tobacco emerged during the 17th century, as the economic anchor of Europe's colonies in the New World, and became focus of deepening controversy, triggering a religious and social backlash against its use. First tobacco factories emerged in Virginia in 1730 to meet the growing demand. The origin and spread of tobacco in different countries and cities around the world is discussed.
