CITY VOTES DOWN AN EFFORT TO END PARTY PRIMARIES

Article Abstract:

The New York City elections for a referendum to establish nonpartisan primaries and choose council members produced a variety of unusual results. The nonpartisan primary referendum was defeated by 70% of the voters, a stinging rejection of NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg's efforts to pass it. The Working Families Party elected Letitia James who defeated Geoffrey A. Davis, the bro ther of assassinated NYC city council member James E. Davis. Staten Island elected its first Republican district attorney in more than 100 years, Daniel M. Donovan Jr. Democrats had controlled the office for the last century.

Facing Vote to Alter Primaries, Many New Yorkers Just Yawn

Article Abstract:

New Yorkers appear indifferent towards the unpcoming Nov. 4, 2003 vote on the referendum that would end political party primaries and open primary elections to all voters. Although a successful referendum could alter the formation of New York City government, voters believe it is of greater concern to the political parties and who could have an advantage in primary elections. Part of the voter apathy is attributed to unfavorable attitudes towards NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg who has contributed $2 million in support for the referendum.

PANEL COMPLETES PLANS TO REVAMP VOTING IN THE CITY

Article Abstract:

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's appointed Charter Revision Commission voted to place a referendum on the Nov. 2003 ballot that would offer voters an opportunity to create nonpartisan elections for municipal offices. Bloomberg advocates ending primaries for municipal elections so that it is easier for candidates to enter local races and voters to have a broader opportunity to choose local officials.
