Calif. utilities win rate increases

Article Abstract:

The California state Public Utilities Commission has approved a petition by Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison to implement electricity rate increases. Both utilities are confronting diminishing power reserves and bankruptcy. They plan to boost rates as early as Jan 4, 2001. The action has triggered outrage among California customers and consumer groups. However, utility officials pointed out that the increase was necessary to counter a power supply shortage stretching from Seattle to the San Fernando Valley in California.

L.A. transit drivers seeing less red

Article Abstract:

The Los Angeles, CA, Metropolitan Transportation Authority has unveiled the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art mass bus transportation system in the hopes of increasing ridership. If their plan works, the system will not only prosper but may, in turn, feed riders into the city's embattled mass rail transit lines, which carry less than one-tenth the riders carried by other big city rail systems such as those in New York, NY, and Boston, MA.
