Automakers see bright future in Asian markets

Article Abstract:

Western automakers are keen on expanding production to the Asian region, especially to India and China, which they consider the two biggest potential auto markets in the world. DaimlerChrysler AG, for instance, announced an agreement to take a controlling stake in Mitsubishi Motors because the latter has operations and partnerships to build vehicles in Japan, China, Vietnam and Australia. Despite being relatively poor, the Asian markets are huge.

GM decides to shutter Oldsmobile

Article Abstract:

General Motors Corp has opted to retire its 103-year-old Oldsmobile brand. The automaker informed 2,801 Oldsmobile dealers of its decision and will deal with them individually on a case-to-case basis. Oldsmobile had been fighting unsecessfully to overcome its dowdy image since the late 1980s. General Motors had been ambivalent about the brand since the late 1980s. Oldsmobile sales had declined steadily since 1985, and the average Oldsmobile dealer sold only 124 vehicles in 1999.

Car sellers, automakers haggle over dealerships: changing sales environment prompts fight

Article Abstract:

The North Carolina Legislature passed a bill banning motor vehicle manufacturers from owning dealerships. The state legislature's decision was preceded by intense arguments and lobbying by both manufacturers and dealers. Under the law, an automobile company cannot have a long-term ownership interest in a dealer if a competitor offering the same brand is within 45 miles of the area. The conflict of interest is rooted in moves by motor vehicle companies to benefit from the purchase of franchised dealers or from factory-owned stores.
