Police urged to buy from safer gunmakers

Article Abstract:

The Dept of Housing and Urban Development, joined by officials from 29 cities and counties on Mar 22, 2000, urge their law enforcement agencies to purchase guns from makers who agree to stricter safety standards. The move is designed to pressure other gun manufacturers to join Smith & Wesson Corp in agreeing to increase safety measures, such as placing trigger locks on all guns, monitoring retailers more carefully and developing a 'smart' gun that can be fired only by authorized users.

ATF report renews calls for gun control

Article Abstract:

A report by the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) Bureau has prompted the administration of Pres Bill Clinton to renew its call for a range of tighter gun control measures. The report, which was based on a survey of 1,530 ATF investigations from Jul 1996 through Dec 1998, found that a disproportionate number of firearms was entering circulation due to illegal trafficking because of corrupt, licensed dealers. These dealers accounted for 133 of the investigations but were linked to 40,365 of the 84,128 firearms involved in the ATF probes.

Gunmakers, wholesalers are allowing ATF direct access to firearms records

Article Abstract:

Firearms manufacturers and wholesalers are providing data to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) which will enable agents to trace crime guns. The data, which will be provided directly to the ATF via computer links, will enable the ATF to determine the manufacturers and retailers of guns used in crimes. ATF dir John Magaw said the computer links have the advantage of speed which can result in the faster arrest of crime suspects.
