Communications rivals spar on a network plan

Article Abstract:

As telecommunications companies convey their support for President Clinton's information superhighway, they are simultaneously engaged in turf fighting. AT&T has teamed up with cellular and cable television companies in arguing that local telephone companies should keep out of the long-distance and cable markets, while local telephone service providers, in turn, argue that they have to be freed from regulations that prevent them from competing in the emerging advanced video services market. The high-speed information superhighway is envisioned to allow schools to access long-distance lectures, individuals to link up with electronic libraries, and businesses to exchange computer files. Leading Democrats agree with industry that the government's role should be limited to setting goals and facilitating improvements to the network.

Foes are softening stands against phone-TV links

Article Abstract:

The Bush administration and Federal Communication Commission Chmn Alfred Sikes are beginning to reverse their steadfast opposition to a bill that would allow telephone companies to own and operate cable television networks. A heated legal battle has erupted over whether or not the telephone companies can control information services and provide television. The Cable Television Act of 1984 mandates that telephone companies cannot offer television, but a new bill aims to repeal these restrictions. Its backers hope to negotiate a compromise in which the telephone companies will agree to upgrade their networks with high-capacity optical fibers by 2015. The potential competition has led cable companies, newspaper publishers and other broadcasters to fight the proposed legislation.
