Publishing giant sets sights on Canada

Article Abstract:

Modern Times Group (Sweden) has set its sights on a number of Canadian cities as it seeks new markets for its Metro newspaper, a free tabloid aimed at users of public transportation. Metro is a popular publication among commuters who use public transit in European cities, such as Prague and Stockholm. It is distributed in train and bus stations and provides readers with the day's top headlines. It is designed to be read in about 20 minutes, uses large photos and many of its stories are only four or five paragraphs long. The Canadian cities being considered for Metro include Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The European publishing giant's key concern in Canada is finding a domestic partners or partners. Canadian law allow foreigners to own up to 25% of Canadian newspapers without restriction. Foreign ownership above that level would not be viable because advertisers would no longer be eligible to deduct the cost of ads in those newspapers as a business expense.
