Condition critical: northern Ontario is reeling as hospital closures hit home

Article Abstract:

The Ontario Health Services Restructuring Commission announced plans to close hospitals in Sudbury and Thunder Bay as part of efforts to cut $1.3 billion from hospital funding by 1999. Hospital officials in Sudbury charge the commission failed to respect local concerns about health care quality.

Former Canadian Supreme Court justice Emmett Hall, who is best remembered for his efforts to create Canada's health care system, died at 96 in Nov 1995. The longtime Saskatchewan resident frequently defended unpopular causes and defendants in his private law practice.
