Cooling economy hits airlines' traffic growth

Article Abstract:

Air traffic increased only 2% in Oct 2000, making it the most sluggish month for growth in two years. Continental Airlines Inc, one of the fastest-growing carriers, filled 71% of its seats, compared with over 73% in Oct 1999. Also, America West Airlines Inc, Delta Air Lines Inc, United Air Lines Inc and Alaska Airlines Inc all sustained declines in traffic compared with last October. A small deal's big impact

Article Abstract:

American Airlines Inc's proposed acquisition of Reno Air for $124 million has resulted in bigger problems for the company. American Airlines said that it will assimilate Reno's 27 jets and 300 pilots into its 648-jet fleet and 9,200-pilot workforce. However, the pilot union said that American might bring Reno Air pilots on board at lower wage while doing the same work as their American Airlines counterparts. American Airlines has already lost $75 million and is engaged in legal battles with its pilots' union.

Airline chief ponders landing fees

Article Abstract:

Northwest Airlines Inc CEO Richard Anderson is seriously considering the merits of 'peak-hour pricing' as a means of decongesting New York LaGuardia airport. The airport overtook Chicago O'Hare in 2000 for the dubious distinction of having the US' worst record for delays. The plan, which will increase landing fees during peak usage times, is also being considered by rivals United and Continental.
