Many observers believe that the Art Gallery of Ontario's announcement that it would be forced to shut down for seven months and lay off 244 workers was a sign that funding for the arts in Canada was in trouble. Declining government funding and dwindling ticket sales have plagued Canadian arts centers.

'A tortuous road': quietly, gays are making progress on rights

Article Abstract:

Gays and lesbians are angered by the political bickering over Bill C-33, which would prohibit discrimination in federal agencies on the basis of sexual orientation. But many are relieved that Prime Minister Chretien is tackling the issue when it is still at the center of public debate.

Public school shakeup: politicians seize a greater role in Canadian classrooms

Article Abstract:

Most Canadian provinces have reduced the number of local school boards and sharply curtailed their powers over such matters as teachers' salaries and curriculum. Ontario Education Minister John Snobelen announced plans to cut the number of school boards from 168 to 66 in 1997.
