Plessisville's voters are normally considered nationalist in orientation, but attendees at sovereignty hearing were clearly skeptical about the Parti Quebecois's (PQ) rosy predictions for life in an independent Quebec. A similar hearing in Windsor was a public relations disaster for the PQ.

The narrow defeat of the referendum on Quebec's sovereignty enlarged the rift between the French- and English- speaking populations. Quebec Premier Jacques Parizeau's speech blaming ethnic voters for the loss inflamed passions more. It is likely that separatists will try again.
