Pilot shortage grounds dozens of United flights daily

Article Abstract:

United Air Lines is being compelled to cancel less than 100 flights daily due to lack of pilots. While most airlines cancel 2% of their flights daily due to weather or mechanical problems, United's 100 daily flight cancellation is much higher at 4%. The airline claims that its pilots are refusing to fly overtime while the union says there are not enough pilots. In response to the problem, United said it would hire 1,200 pilots this year.

Delta looks into Continental as possible merger partner

Article Abstract:

Delta Air Lines CEO Leo Mullin announced that they are studying a possible merger with Continental Airlines. Delta had made an acquisition offer for Continental before, which Continental declined when Northwest bought a majority-voting stake in it. Continental is expected to be more amenable to a merger if regulators approve UAL's acquisition of US Airways. If the deal pushes through, Delta could buy Northwest's stake in Continental.

Northwest, pilots report no progress

Article Abstract:

Northwest Airlines, the fourth largest airline in the US, could face a strike by its pilots after making no progress in the contract negotiations with its pilots union. The airline and the Air Line Pilots Association did not reschedule talks after finishing three days of negotiations and said that the talks are at an impasse. Should both sides reject arbitration, an impasse called could mean a strike after 30 days of cooling-off period. A strike could be called if either side rejects arbitration. The two parties are in conflict in terms of job protection guarantees if the alliance between Northwest and Continental Airlines is effected.
