Careless cargo

Article Abstract:

American Airlines has become the first airline to be convicted of mishandling hazardous material. AMR, the airline's parent company, has admitted wrongdoing and paid an $8 million penalty. The lawsuit was filed by federal investigators after uncovering numerous instances of violations at the carrier's operation in Miami, FL, and Latin America. In one case, the carrier loaded nine times the legal limit of a hazardous chemical called Dioxital on a Mexico-to-Miami flight in 1995.
