EC accepts AOL-Time Warner deal

Article Abstract:

America Online Inc's $130-billion acquisition of Time Warner Inc was approved on Oct 11, 2000 by the European Commission (EC). In welcoming the Commission's decision, the two companies said that they are 'confident' that regulators in the US will do likewise. The Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission are scheduled to decide this fall. The EC cleared the merger between AOL and Time Warner after the companies agreed to conditions guaranteeing that they would not dominate the European Union's fledgling Internet music industry.

Showdown on the Strip

Article Abstract:

MGM Grand Hotel Inc majority owner Kirk Kerkorian has presented Stephen Wynn of Mirage Resorts Inc a $32-billion takeover offer. The bid with an acquisition proposal of $17 a share or a mix of cash and MGM stock was rejected by Wynn and the casino's board of directors. They are, however, still open to negotiations with MGM Grand Hotel. If a merger between the two casinos pushes through, this will create the US' largest gaming company.

MediaOne has formally accepted the $62.5-bil acquisition offer of AT and T Corp last Saturday, May 1, 1999. However, Comcast, which has also offered to buy MediaOne, is not yet giving up. Comcast is trying to team-up with Microsoft, America Online and Bell Atlantic to match or top the AT and T offer. Comcast has until May 6, 1999 to rival AT and T's offer, which critics say could raise numerous antitrust concerns.
