Europe plans a constellation of satellites. (Galileo project to provide GPS data)

Article Abstract:

Rejecting reliance on the U.S. military-controlled Global Positioning System for satellite data, the European Space Agency has committed itself to deploying a multi-satellite system to provide similar data. The civilian satellite system will cost billions of euros and be deployed in 2008 under the name Galileo. Other countries wary of U.S. market dominance, including Russia and Canada, are also interested in the project. Critics argue that the system will be costly and only produce data that can already accessed for free from GPS.

Bidders plot comeback for a satellite network; in the satellite business, the low technology can be the most difficult part

Article Abstract:

Orbcomm Global is still in business, trying to use the bankruptcy process and its acquisition by Advanced Communications Techologies. Low-tech problems such as using the wrong glue on a product, and software problems cost the company dearly and led to bankruptcy filing. One former company official says that the firm's crucial error was to abandon its original business plan for low-priced mass market services and go into demanding industrial markets which it was ill-equipped to serve.
