Retail frenzy may be too late

Article Abstract:

It is unlikely that the retail industry will recover from a lackluster season despite purchases by last-minute shoppers and gift givers. Shoppers can expect huge markdowns, but retailers with large surplus inventories can expect slimmer profits. The two major factors which hurt consumer spending during the 2000 Christmas holiday season included harsh weather in the Midwest and Southeast, which kept buyers at home, and rising fuel prices, which tightened holiday budgets.

Street expects Lucent turnaround to slash 10,000 jobs

Article Abstract:

Lucent Technologies Inc, the world's leading telecommunications equipment provider, is expected to announce on Jan 24, 2001, a turnaround plan that could include a charge of more than $1 billion and up to 10,000 job cuts. According to Wall Street analysts, the restructuring may also include plans for discontinuing a number of products, streamlining sales, marketing and support efforts, and revamping internal information systems. Such moves are being considered by Lucent to save more than $1 billion over the next 12 months.

Experts say Lucent faces long, winding road in quest for CEO

Article Abstract:

Lucent Technologies is having a hard time finding its next CEO due to a series of bad news and a short supply of talents. Candidates are deterred by the SEC's investigation into Lucent's accounting practices, credit ratings and mounting losses. Company spokeswoman Mary Lou Ambrus says interest over the job remains strong over several candidates but refused to name them. Ideally, candidates should have experience in telecommunications, according to recruiters.
