Firms cook up new way to keep workers

Article Abstract:

Some employers are serving their employees gourmet meals in an effort to retain employees in a tight labor market. Also, gourmet food can be an additional reason for employees to stay longer in their workplaces. In a survey conducted by Ceridia, 36% of employers are offering free food and beverage. That percentage is higher than the percentage of employers who are offering telecommuting as a perk.

Ford plans to pay low-performing workers to quit

Article Abstract:

Ford Motor will offer severance plans in 1998 to its low-performing workers to make them depart the company. The company's severance plans will be effected under voluntary retirement and separation programs. Citing internal Ford Motor papers, the Detroit Free Press reported that future merits/bonuses will be limited for the targeted low-performing employees who do not have participations. Ford Motor spokeswoman Francine Romine-MacBride stresses that workers' performance is just one aspect that will be considered, adding that this procedure is common.
