Article Abstract:

The 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) for cars and trucks was standardized and required by federal regulators starting with 1981 models. The codes are assigned by the Society of Automotive Engineers under a contract with the NHTSA. The VIN gives information on where the vehicle was built, the manufacturer, security code and model year. A VIN starting with 3VW indicates that a vehicle was made in Mexico by Volkswagen.
