Global effort to make machines that make chips

Article Abstract:

International cooperation has become the key in the development of the next generation of semiconductor production equipment. International competition is no longer seen as the threat it used to be and multi-national alliances are needed to develop new technologies in chip-making which cost upwards of one billion dollars. In April 2001, engineers from German, Dutch and American companies will introduce a new semiconductor production machine that etches circuit lines only several hundred atoms across.
