Has economic development proved Malthus wrong?

Article Abstract:

Thomas Robert Malthus in 1798 predicted in his "Essay on the Principle of Population" that the earth's population, if unchecked, would have catastrophic consequences. However, at the end of his life, he conceded that economic growth would improve the prospects for the human race. Others believe that modern technology and economic growth cannot remedy the problem of earth's growing population. They argue that planet Earth gains 250,000 people every day, 1.3 bil people go to bed hungry, and thousands live in poverty and suffer from malnutrition.
