High-bandwidth Web connections will let passengers surf as they fly

Article Abstract:

Boeing Co. is leading a partnership that plans to develop full Internet access for passengers on airplanes in flight. The Boeing system will be based on high-frequency satellites and on an antenna technology that will electronically direct its radio beams, called the Connexion system. It uses 1,000 little antenna modules arranged in a phased array. The antenna has a computer that directs the beam from one satellite to another as the plane moves through the air. Passengers will see two jacks on the back of the seat in front of them, one for conventional modems, the other for those with Ethernet cards.the service will probably cost $20 to $25 an hour, and is expected to become available in the U.S. late in 2001.

Quantum leap may transform chips; putting linked photons through their paces could let companies build much smaller transistors

Article Abstract:

Physicists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Univ. of Wales are applying quantum theory to reduce photons, or particles of light, from a 248-nanometer laser to a wavelength of 62 nanometers. This results in transistors one-third the size of those in current semiconductor chips. The key to inventing smaller transistors rests with making shorter wavelengths by entangling photons, passing them through slits and producing twice the energy in a reduced wavelength.
