New 'pump laser' doubles fiber-optic speed

Article Abstract:

Novalux will introduce on May 11, 2000 its laser device, called 'pump laser,' that may increase data, voice and video transmissions through fiber-optic cable. Embedded in a fingernail-size chip, Novalux claims that its product can shoot 300-500 milliwatts or more, compared to 100-200 milliwatts fired by existing lasers. Also, the telecommunications and optical networking startup will unveil its manufacturing plant in Silicon Valley.

Compaq alters focus to services, software

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer Corp. will create a marketing unit to sell software and services and reduce $200 million in costs above the $600 million in cost reduction measures already planned. The move follows IBM's lead to survive in the computer hardware market.

High-speed Net links go wireless with Cisco

Article Abstract:

Cisco Systems Inc has unveiled additional information about its wireless technology that is capable of delivering high-speed Internet access. The networking company, which hopes to have a unit ready for businesses in early 2000, predicts that the technology will easily become the next standard in the broadband wireless industry. Cisco hopes that its wireless technology will be provide users with an alternative to cable modems and digital subscriber lines.
