Deutsche Telekom bids for Qwest, US West

Article Abstract:

Deutsche Telekom of Germany, Europe's largest telephone company, has made separate takeover offers for Qwest Communications Inc and U S West Inc, that amounts to more than $80 billion in stock. The European firm's move was incited by news of Qwest and U S West's own $36 billion merger. Deutsche Telekom also made the offer to surprise other potential suitors that include France Telecom and British Telecommunications.

MCI WorldCom eyes British wireless phone company

Article Abstract:

MCI Worldcom has set its sights on acquiring Orange Personal Communications Services, UK's third-largest wireless phone company, after its $120-billion buyout of Sprint has been approved by US and EU regulators. Insiders say Worldcom may bid as much as $40 billion just to get Orange. Worldcom CEO Bernie Ebbers has said that Orange would complete the company's wireless portfolio in Europe. More so now that Worldcom has decided that it will no longer participate at auctions for UK's increasingly expensive wireless telephone licenses.

GTE, Bell Atlantic to merge in $53B deal

Article Abstract:

Bell Atlantic of Manhattan, NY, will purchase GTE of Stamford, CT, for close to $53 billion in stocks. The deal, which was approved by the board of directors of both firms on Jul. 27, 1998, will form one of the US' biggest telecommunications firm with annual revenues of $53 billion and 62 million local phone lines. The acquisition, which is expected to go through a strict regulatory review, will mark the first instance that a large local phone firm will combine with a nationwide long-distance telephone service firm.
