High stakes

Article Abstract:

John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia, is planning a shakeup in the country's media ownership laws. According to the government draft, prohibitions on cross-media ownership and foreign investment in the media industry will be eradicated or largely scaled down. The article provides additional information on the pros and cons of this proposed reform.

Freight strain

The Patrick-Toll rail freight joint venture, Pacific National that was supposed to become a de facto national rail freight monopoly and earn rich profits, has gone down the gurgler. The two reasons for this are rising competition in rail freight and a three-way political bun fight between the Carr government in NSW, Canberra and the NSW Labor Council.

Stock exchanges around the world are consolidating at a rapid pace, in a bid to become more cost effective and efficient. The partnership between the Singaporean and Australian exchanges allows members to buy and sell in the other market at will. This type of cooperation may offer more benefits than consolidation.
