High times doing hard time: packed with dealers and substance abusers, Canada's prisons have become a lucrative market for the drug trade

Article Abstract:

There is a great deal of drug abuse and trafficking within Canadian prisons. Relatives, friends and staff are the primary sources of the drugs, which can sometimes sell for 500% of their street value. Many inmates report their drug usage actually increased during their prison terms.

Prisons for profit: America's crackdown on crime fuels a jailhouse boom

Trends toward a harder line on crime and privatized prisons is resulting in more prisons and increased government spending. Spending can be minimized through the privatization of prisons. Yet, private prisons tend to treat their inmates more humanely than those run by the state.
