Hollywood braces for strikes

Article Abstract:

Hollywood writers and actors, represented by the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild are brading for strikes. The writers have set a May 1, 2001, deadline and the actors could go on a strike on Jun 30, 2001. The guilds are negotiating separate contracts but they share a major point known as residuals, which is money paid when shows and movies are sold overseas and for cable, video, DVDs and the Internet. Because both disputes center on the same issue, a writers' strike could trigger one by actors.

Writers strike would spell trouble

Article Abstract:

Hollywood screenwriters, represented by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), are threatening to walk out in May 2001, when their contract expires. The 11,000 movie and TV scriptwriters want more pay, more credit and more control over their work, and are fighting studio demands for givebacks. If the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists join ranks with the writers, the movie and TV series assembly line could screech to a halt.
