Incentives Lure Many to Quit, Even With a Lean Job Market

Article Abstract:

Corporations are using early retirement packages as another way of reducing their workforces. Employees who still need to work are accepting these offers because they believe they will find new jobs eventually and are better off with extensive severances, continued health benefits, and full pension payments. Corporations achieve their goal of reducing their payrolls. How FedEX and Verizon Communications used this approach is examined.

College Degree Still Pays, but It's Leveling Off

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that on average college graduates earn 45 percent more than workers with just a high school diploma. The spread between the two groups has not changed since the 1990s.
