U.S. to kill tax break scheme

Article Abstract:

A set of U.S. tax incentives that harm Canadian corporations may be repealed to bring the U.S. into compliance with recent World Trade Organization rulings. The tax law, which benefits U.S. exporters, would impact about $3.5 billion in unpaid annual taxes on U.S. exports.

Petrocan, Ultramar kill proposed joint venture

Article Abstract:

Petro-Canada of Calgary, Alberta, has agreed with Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corp. of San Antonio, TX, to postpone their US-Canada joint venture since the federal Competition Bureau will not sanction that transaction. The bureau had previously indicated that it was concerned regarding concentration-of-ownership issues between the two firms. Ultramar CEO Roger Hemminghaus and Petrocan chief executive officer Jim Stanford stressed that any investigation by the bureau would have cost too much, taken a long time to conduct, and produced an unpredictable outcome.
