Intel reports earnings beat estimates by 2 cents

Article Abstract:

Intel Corp.'s second quarter earnings beat analysts' forecasts by 2 cents despite a 76% fall from earnings this time, last year. Shares rose 2.6% before Intel reported earnings at $854 million with $6.3 billion in revenue. Wall Street analysts predicted a 10% profit; Intel reported 12%. A million more microprocessors were sold than from last quarter. Demand for communication and memory semiconductors still remains weak though Intel plans to pump $7.5 billion into capital expenses.

Intel insists faster chips can aid sales

Article Abstract:

Intel Architecture Group general manager Paul S. Otellini has announced that his company will continue to introduce more-gigaherz chips, though he conceded that the market is still sluggish. He said sales for Intel's second-half would be higher than the first, which is not a stretch. Intel is planning a chip with 3.5 gigahertz just after introducing its Pentium 4 with 2 gigahertz.

Motorola to lay off 2,500 at Illinois cell phone plant

Article Abstract:

Motorola Inc. will close down production at its cell phone plant in Harvard, Illinois, by June 30. The site will remain open for non-manufacturing activities. The high-tech industry as a whole is making similar money-saving efforts. 3Com will soon decide which employees to lay off in its plan to save over $200 million annually.
