A master deal maker got more than he bargained for when he tried to make an acquisition

Article Abstract:

WPP Group PLC CEO Sir Martin Sorrell is known as an aggressor in the field of ad agency mergers and acquisitions. The size and complexity of any proposed merger has never fazed him. In trying to outmanuever France's Havas Advertising in bidding for Tempus Group however, Sorrell got involved in tussles with unhappy stockholders and regulators. He now is forced to proceed with a cash merger of Tempus Group media buying service valued at $626 million.

Japan's dominant agency is looking overseas, but it will find that world to be much less congenial

Article Abstract:

Japan's most influential ad agency for over 100 years, Dentsu dominates over Japan's $50 billion ad market. Last week, the ad giant presided over an enthusiastically received initial public offering, only to see shares settle at 12% up, below expectations. Dentsu hopes to expand its overseas business, now only 5% of its $14.8 billion yearly earnings of 2000. The competition is daunting what with the formation of new global agencies via mergers, and the political generosity of the Japanese government to the agency would not apply in other countries.
