States must decide this week whether to join tobacco deal

Article Abstract:

US states are expected to decide on an agreement that calls for the country's four biggest tobacco firms to pay $206 billion in the next 25 years. The deal would require cigarette retailers to discontinue advertisements, shell out $1.5 billion to fund antitobacco promotions and pay for a research to help reduce teen smoking. The states include Mississippi, Florida, Minnesota, Texas, California and New York. On the other hand, the anti-smoking group is seeking for not less than 30 days to study the proposed deal.

Justices to hear FDA make its case for regulating tobacco

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on whether the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has the authority to regulate cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. The FDA said that tobacco products qualify as "drugs" and "devices" because they contain nicotine, an addictive ingredient that affects the structure or any function of the body. However, the tobacco industry argued that the FDA was never given the right by the Congress the authority to regulate tobacco, which the agency formally asserted in 1996.
