Article Abstract:

There was little discussion of government-sponsored jobs programs or tax cuts in the spring 1997 political campaign. Canadian voters appear to accept the idea that the budget deficit must take precedence over tax cuts. Inflation, the stock market and other financial issues are also analyzed.

Upcoming implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement is causing concern because of recent trade disputes between the US and Canada. Specific resolutions of trade disputes will need to be explained because of law differences between the US, Canada and Mexico.

Free trade to the rescue

Mexico is in the midst of a radical program of economic reform pushed by Pres Carlos Salinas de Gortari. The centerpiece of the reform program is the North American Free Trade Agreement between Mexico, the US and Canada.
