Lucent looks to buy start-up Chromatis

Article Abstract:

Lucent Technologies is holding talks for the acquisition of Chromatis Networks, reputedly for as much as $5.7 billion. Chromatis is an optical networking start-up but still has no revenues. Lucent wants to acquire Chromatis to address its weakness in optical technology, which sends voice and data signals across fiber-optic networks through pulses of light. The deal also highlights the cutthroat competition in the telecommunications equipment sector, where top companies such as Lucent and Nortel, are acquiring unproven startups.
