Major airlines consider discounted Web fares

Article Abstract:

Major airlines are considering to offer discounted fares to travelers who will book from their Web sites, according to analysts familiar with both the airlines and Internet industries. One of the major carriers that is believed to be considering such move is Delta, which has been facing Internet challenge from Air Tran, its closest competitor in the Atlanta, GA, market. However, Delta CEO Leo Mullin declined to comment about speculations that his company intends to offer discounted Web site bookings, noting only that Internet is going to completely change the way the airline industry conducts business. Other major carriers that are expected to offer discounted Web fares include American and United Airlines.

High gas prices squeeze employees, businesses

Article Abstract:

Gasoline prices averaging $1.50 a gallon are creating difficulties for workers who get mileage reimbursements for driving their cars on business. Consultancy Runzheimer International noted that every 20-cent increase in gasoline prices adds one cent to the cost of driving a typical car one mile. The 40-cent hike in gas means that an employee who drives just 1,000 miles per month is already losing $240 a year. This figure may reach $500 if gasoline prices reach the $1.80 level being forecasted.
