Makers, dealers, investors gang up on Net car sellers

Article Abstract:

The future looks gloomy for Internet auto-buying services as their relationships with automobile manufacturers, dealers and investors begin to sour. More dealers are dropping online services in 2000 due to high costs and few leads that turn into actual sales. Automobile makers such as DaimlerChrysler is urging dealers not to sell to online brokers since it is not in the best interest of its dealer network and its brands to include a third party in its dealings. Due to this trend, some sites are resorting to downsizing or merging.

GM plan for dealerships irks dealers

Article Abstract:

General Motors Corp's plan to form a unit that will purchase as many as 770 dealerships and turn them into company-owned and operated stores has upset its dealers. GM was forced to move into retailing because of several dramatic changes, including demanding buyers, online car-buying services and publicly-owned consolidators such as AutoNation. Dealers fear that the creation of the General Motors Retailing Holding unit will prevent them from getting the best-selling vehicles first and better finance deals from General Motors Acceptance Corp.
