Motorola stock falls on deal reports

Article Abstract:

Motorola Inc's shares dropped 9% as a result of news that the company is discussing a possible $10-billion acquisition of cable set-top manufacturer General Instrument Corp. The deal would allow Motorola, a leader in making cell phones, computer chips and modems, to make a foray into broadband services and gain a market for the chips it produces for cable boxes. On the other hand, General Instrument would gain access to Motorola's more well-known brand and experiences in retail distribution and manufacturing.
