The governments of Australia and Ireland are negotiating a treaty of co-production in film and television industries. Both countries will agree to share creative and artistic expertise, technical facilities, actors, financial benefits, and locations. Under this venture, the film industries in both countries are eligible for tax relief, production ownership, and government protection.

Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister John Howard's introduction of a tax reform package is considered to be the most important initiative of his political career. Opinion polls suggest that 46% of Australians believe a GST is not important for an overhaul of the tax system, 38% favor a GST, and almost half of these respondents could be persuaded to change their minds.

Article Abstract:

Peter Reith, Australia's workplace relations minister, is not significantly disconcerted by the High Court's ruling that the 1400 waterside workers whose dismissal he approved should be reinstated. Reith remains committed to reforming waterfront labor relations. Critics feel his stated concerns for productivity mask an anti-union bias.
