Native Americans' future: do U.S. policies block opportunities for progress?

Article Abstract:

Economic survival is a foremost issue for the 2.1 million American Indians. Of all the US ethnic groups, American Indians lead in unemployment, disease, and poverty rates. Indians say the movement to restrict their gambling operations is affecting their opportunities to make a living, and is violating Indian sovereignty guaranteed in the Constitution. Federal funding cuts for the Bureau of Indian Affairs have impacted education, welfare, and housing programs on reservations.

National forests

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists have long argued that clearing trees and building roads in forests have destroyed wildlife habitat and rivers that provide drinking water to surrounding communities. However, in 1998, they are shifting their attention to tourists. It is estimated that over 800 mil visitors every year visit the national forests. However, many in the Forest Services are beginning to question past policies and are emphasizing the need to conserve forest resources.

Quebec sovereignty

Article Abstract:

Voters in Quebec are being given another chance to seceded from Canada. This time, the election is being held to address what Quebec, and the separationist Bloc Quebecois party, feels is an intentional slight to the province by the federal government. The US has taken a non-interference stance, hoping not to offend one of its largest trade partners. The political activity of the major players in the separationist movement is discussed.
