New software, new scrutiny for Microsoft; U.S. and states consider Windows XP challenge

Article Abstract:

Even though Microsoft has been found to be a monopolist, it is not yet certain whether the federal and state antitrust regulators will force the software giant to alter its new operating system, Windows XP, before shipping the final code in August. Letting the firm ship it 'as is' is seen as needed in light of the slowdown in the industry overall. Allowing it to go, though, is also seen as letting Microsoft do what it wants to do, in the way it wants to do it. This time the offending features that should probably be modified include Internet music, instant messaging and online shopping.

States press U.S. to take tough stand on Microsoft

Article Abstract:

State attorney generals in the antitrust case against Microsoft want tough sanctions against the firm and its Windows XP operating system. They are willing to break with the Justice Department and go after Microsoft on their own if the steps suggested by the department are insufficient to promote competition in the software industry. Statements from the attorneys general of California, Iowa and Connecticut came a day after the Department of Justice dropped its plan to split up the company as well as its claim that Micorsoft had illegally bundled its Internet browser with Windows.
