OMERS taking huge writedown

Article Abstract:

The Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board (OMERS), one of the largest pension funds in the US, indicated that it is taking more than $600 million in writedowns in 2004 after a year of mediocre performance. The pensions fund manages the retirement savings of 340,000 active and retired Ontario local government employees and has recorded a $2.6 billion increase in assets scaling up to $32.7 billion.

Pension plans face losses amid dismal markets

The portfolio values of Canadian pension plans are facing major losses of 10 to 15 percent. This will force some companies to supply increased contributions during a period of economic downturn.
