Office for weary commuters is long way from office

Article Abstract:

The Riverside Telecommuting Center, sponsored by the state of California, Riverside County and local businesses, is equipped with computers and telecommunications equipment so that employees can do their work at a regional center and avoid a commute into Los Angeles. Office space in the center is provided at a low cost for the first year as an inducement for employers. The concept is envisioned as a way to reduce freeway traffic and air pollution. 'Telecommuting' already is a growing trend, with an estimated three million to 5.5 million persons working away from their offices and maintaining contact via electronic communication systems. That number will probably triple in the next 10 to 15 years. The Riverside center, which is the first of its kind in the nation, could signify a move toward neighborhood 'satellite' offices.
