Oil Find Hints at a Less Dependent Cuba

Article Abstract:

Fidel Castro announced that Canadian petroleum companies Sherritt Inc. and Pebercan, have discovered major oil deposits in an area of the Gulf of Mexico that Cuba controls. The discovery could have significant economic and international impact, changing Cuba from an oil importing to oil exporting nation.

Repsol YPF in conjunction with Cubapetroleo is exploring the Cuban waters of the Gulf of Mexico for oil. If significant discoveries are made the United States may have to re-examine its trade sanctions with Cuba.
