Political realities

Article Abstract:

Socio-political developments could help mould the future of the US automobile industry. The establishment of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico could spell the loss of jobs for American auto workers. Presidential candidate Bill Clinton's proposal to increase the fuel economy of vehicles, would also have an effect on the industry. Automobile manufacturers should stifle the desire to copy their Japanese counterparts and instead concentrate on formulating solutions based on a purely American framework.

The Italian Mafia is politically influential in Sicily and in two southern provinces. It has acquired lawful businesses, from wine companies to hospitals and soccer teams. These businesses generate considerable income and augments the Mafia's political power. Due to its political influence, the Mafia is capable of usurping government funds intended to improve social conditions in southern Italy's depressed regions. The Mafia is likely to remain powerful as long as it can influence the outcome of elections.

Mafia defectors

Article Abstract:

A significant number of Mafia underbosses have turned against their leaders by joining the federal witness-protection program and testifying against their former bosses. There are two main causes for this development. The first is that many Mafia officials are now afraid of being imprisoned, and the second is that the traditional Mafia values of loyalty and silence are no longer observed by many members. There is a perceived lack of commitment among younger Mafiosi to the Mafia's objectives.
