Price of victory: the bottom line

Article Abstract:

The recent election will turn out to be very expensive for Australia when the programs and policies promised by politicians are put into place. The policies that make the future of Australia uncertain include the detention of boat people on islands in the Pacific and the promise to join the war against terrorism. If there is a fast turnaround in global financial fortunes, then Australia will fare well.

Bush comes to shove

Article Abstract:

The simultaneous election campaigning in Australia and United States that will focus on the issues of global terrorism, national defence and security is reported. The Prime Minister does not prefer a double dissolution election as there is a joint sitting of both the houses, but prefers a half-senate election as it offers a much more attractive strategy.

Lost tribes

Article Abstract:

There is a trend in the 2001 Australian state elections for previously loyal supporters of the major parties to change their affiliation and vote for minor party candidates. Voters such as retirees who were adversely affected by the general sales tax that the government introduced in 2000, can no longer be relied upon to be loyal party supporters.
