The policies that make the future of Australia uncertain include the detention of boat people on islands in the Pacific and the promise to join the war against terrorism. If there is a fast turnaround in global financial fortunes, then Australia will fare well.

The Prime Minister does not prefer a double dissolution election as there is a joint sitting of both the houses, but prefers a half-senate election as it offers a much more attractive strategy.
