Questioning a casino craze

Article Abstract:

Financially strapped provincial governments are increasingly turning to casinos as sources of revenue, but results have been disappointing. Saskatchewan's Casino Regina, for example, earned a profit of only $2.2 million in 1996, much less than the $20 million in profit that had been projected.

Australia Prime Minister Paul Keating began a campaign to change Australia from a constitutional monarchy to an independent republic after taking office in Mar 1993. The greatest factors for the change in status are the economic and social influences from neighboring Asian countries.

Upsets down under: Australians weigh republicanism

Australia's Prime Minister, Paul Keating, expressed the desire for the country to become independent of Great Britain when Queen Elizabeth II visited in Feb 1992. A recent poll revealed that 57% of the respondents desired independence.
