Rethinking NAFTA: does the trade pact help or hurt U.S. workers?

Article Abstract:

Some people think that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is helping US workers, while others believe the pact is encouraging companies to hire Mexican workers at lower wages. NAFTA, which took effect Jan. 1, 1994, brings down trade barriers between the US, Canada and Mexico. NAFTA supporters assert that NAFTA will increase employment at high-wage US companies and improve the Mexican economy. The December 1994 devaluation of the peso, however, produced a $15.4 billion trade deficit for the US in 1995, after a $1.3 billion trade surplus in 1994.

Combating AIDS: are researchers getting closer to a cure?

Article Abstract:

Advances in the understanding of AIDS and HIV continue to suggest that a vaccine may be forthcoming, but no previous drugs have proven to be truly effective. Four antiviral drugs have been approved in the US, but none of them offer much hope to AIDS patients. Recent advances focus less on AIDS and more on the body's immune system and the biological aspects of HIV infection. Social, economic and health policy implications of the search for a cure for AIDS and a vaccine for HIV are discussed.

Should the focus of AIDS research shift from testing specific drugs to increasing basic knowledge about the virus?

Article Abstract:

The lack of success of drugs designed to combat AIDS has led many to call for a shift in the focus of research from drugs to the underlying physiological aspects of the AIDS and HIV viruses. Proponents of such a shift claim that a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying infection would be necessary for the development of an HIV vaccine. Opponents claim such an action would delay progress, risking government funding for research.
