Old company learns new tricks

Article Abstract:

Corning has rid itself of its 'old economy' ties and is gambling its future on the 'new economy' world of high technology innovation. The 149- year-old company, which is best known for the cookware that it stopped manufacturing in 1998, has always been a glass products producer. It is the world's largest optical fiber manufacturer. It employs 1,500 scientists and engineers who apply for an average of one patent per working day in the race to manipulate data which comes in the form of light pulses.

SUV drivers carry fear as constant passenger

Article Abstract:

More than 1 million US motorists that are likely driving around on recalled Bridgestone/Firestone are beset with anxiety and fear, especially those who must transport children on vehicles carrying the tires. Bridgestone/Firestone has recalled all P234/75R-15 size ATX, ATX II tires as well as Wilderness tires of the same size made in the company's Decatur, IL, plant. Irritation and the inconvenience of having the tires replaced are also problems being experienced by motorists.

Skies near empty for New Year's

Major airline companies have opted to considerably reduce the number of flights on New Year's Eve so that only 45 jets will be flying across the US when the clock strikes 12:00 midnight on Jan 1, 2000. Airline business on New Year's Eve 1999 will be especially slow compared to other years because customers have apparently been reluctant to travel. However, many airlines announced that they would have more international flights in the air at midnight than domestic flights.
