Satellite Web links let Indian tribes take a technological jump; broadband access for reservations where phone service can be a luxury

Article Abstract:

Starband Communications, the Southwest Navajo Nation Virtual Alliance and Northern Arizona University have collaborated to provide satellite Internet connections to 120 locations. The 2-way satellite dishes will serve Navajo, Hopi, and Havasupai tribe members in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Computers attached to the network download data at rates approaching 500 kilobits per second; the upload rate is 150 kbps. Schools and local officials especially welcome the faster, more versatile communications link with surrounding communities and beyond.

For Asian satellite network, simplicity is simply better

Article Abstract:

Asia Cellular Satellite System is a new Indonesian company providing satellite phone services strictly focused on the Asian market. The company has just one satellite fixed at a point 22 miles above the earth. The simpler system allows for cheaper phone-call prices with the one drawback being slightly poorer voice quality. The company will be able to offer satellite phone service on very small cellular telephones with this satellite. The satellite also has a unique traffic-direction antenna that routes calls to the ground stations capable of handling calls most efficiently.
