Should the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) be expanded to cover the entire Western Hemisphere?

Article Abstract:

Some people think that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) should be expanded to cover the Western Hemisphere because Latin American countries are becoming attractive trade partners. From 1985-94, US exports to Chile grew from $682 million to $2.8 billion, and NAFTA is expected to promote even higher gains. Other people think that NAFTA has been a failure because instead of producing job growth, it has encouraged job loss. The US should also consider the lack of human rights in Latin America before it moves forward to expand NAFTA.

Regional pacts

Article Abstract:

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signed by former Pres Bush remains a debatable issue that has yet to convince Congress of its merits. Although NAFTA aims to strengthen regional US competitiveness, labor unions andenvironmentalists, in reflection of Congress' hesitancy, are doubtful of the overall effects of such a pact. US industry may seek cheaper labor costs in Mexico and leave countless American workers jobless. Moreover, Mexico possesseslenient environmental laws that may entice US firms to exploit the Mexican environment.
